WINNIPEG — The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have officially added one of the most promising young Canadian quarterbacks in recent memory. On April 16, 2026, the club announced the signing of Taylor Elgersma to a standard rookie contract (two years plus an option). The 24-year-old pivot from London, Ontario, will report to rookie camp on May 6 after a winding professional journey that took him through NFL training camps, preseason action, and a brief UFL stint hampered by visa complications.
At 6-foot-5 and 227 pounds, Elgersma brings prototypical size, a cannon arm, and proven production from his standout career at Wilfrid Laurier University. He was originally selected by the Blue Bombers in the second round (18th overall) of the 2025 CFL Draft but elected to chase NFL opportunities first. Now, after testing the waters south of the border, the Hec Crighton Trophy winner says it’s time to come home.
“I think it was time for me to come home,” Elgersma told reporters during his April 17 media availability. “It’s been special to kind of go through this process of Green Bay through the NFL combine through training camp over there in the UFL. For me I think it was time for me to come home… So, it’s something for me that I’m super excited about, super fired up about and ready to get rolling.”
A Star at Laurier and a Glimpse in the NFL
Elgersma dominated U Sports football during his time with the Golden Hawks. In 2024, he earned the Hec Crighton Trophy as the top player in the country, throwing for 4,252 yards and 35 touchdowns with 11 interceptions while leading Laurier to an undefeated regular season and a Vanier Cup appearance. Over his university career, he completed 775 of 1,098 passes (70.6 percent) for 10,306 yards, 77 touchdowns, and 32 interceptions, while adding 589 rushing yards and 17 scores on the ground.
He became the first U Sports quarterback invited to the Reese’s Senior Bowl and earned first-team All-Canadian honours in 2024 and second-team in 2023. After going undrafted in the 2025 NFL Draft, Elgersma signed with the Green Bay Packers. He appeared in three preseason games, completing 16 of 23 passes for 166 yards, one touchdown, and zero interceptions. He later received workouts with the Giants, 49ers, Bears, and Dolphins before joining the Birmingham Stallions of the UFL.
Unfortunately, work visa issues prevented him from seeing the field in the UFL, despite strong support from Stallions head coach A.J. McCarron. With that door closing, Elgersma turned his attention back to the CFL and the team that drafted him.
Fitting Into a Loaded Quarterback Room
Elgersma joins a competitive quarterback group headlined by two-time CFL Most Outstanding Player Zach Collaros. The veteran, now 37 and in what reports suggest is the final year of his deal, remains the clear QB1, but the Bombers have added depth with UFL standout Bryce Perkins and former Auburn signal-caller Payton Thorne. Veteran Terry Wilson provides additional experience.
Collaros, who once threw with Elgersma before the draft, offered a colourful scouting report: “I just couldn’t believe how tall he was… Like Ivan Drago, honestly… He throws it very hard. Seemed like a good guy.”
Elgersma is quick to emphasize he’s not arriving with expectations of immediate starter snaps. “My job is to come here and help the Winnipeg Blue Bombers win a Grey Cup,” he said. “That’s all I’m focussed on, is coming to be the best version of myself in the building every single day.” He plans to learn from Collaros and the entire room while getting up to speed on the Canadian game and the Bombers’ system ahead of main camp opening May 10.
A Canadian QB With Big Aspirations
As a national player with elite credentials, Elgersma represents more than just depth. He hopes to follow the path of recent Canadian success stories like Nathan Rourke and Tre Ford. “To answer what it would mean to be a starting Canadian quarterback? It would mean everything,” he said. “Having a Canadian at the helm, it brings a lot of excitement to a fan base; it brings a lot of excitement to the league… I hope to follow in their footsteps.”
The Blue Bombers, perennial Grey Cup contenders, now have another high-upside Canadian arm in the fold. With training camp just weeks away, Elgersma is already studying film, planning workouts with former Laurier teammates in Waterloo, and driving north to join his new team.
For a franchise known for developing talent and winning, the long wait for Elgersma appears to have been worth it. The 6-foot-5 quarterback is ready to roll—and Winnipeg fans are eager to see what he can do in blue and gold.
